West Ellensburg Park Maintenance

So...who is in charge of the Parks? When I ask this, I am referring to the garbage left by the ball players and their families. I am referring to the poop not scooped by the pet owners. I am referring to all the garbage that has backed up against the ball field walls/fences from the wind. Don't our hard earned tax dollars pay for the upgrade and maintenance of the parks? Why do I feel like our tax money is wasted on this project? I recently took my dog for a walk in the new park and was quite disturbed by what I saw. Blatent disregard for the blocked off dirt patches. Someone thinks it's okay to disregard the bright orange pylons that block certain areas for a reason. Guess the rules don't apply to them. Garbage just left on the fields and tire tracks everywhere on the grass. Also, cars driving on the walkway and excessive speeding of the ball players in and out of the park. Granted, the parks department is is attempting to make some improvements but even with all the signs stating that pets must be leashed according to city ordinance, people are just letting the dog out of their vehicles to just run and poo where ever they please without the owner cleaning up the poo. And yet...noone is enforcing anything...oh, excuse me, my mistake. There is one EPD out there once in a while. But I don't see him out there enforcing anything...just sitting. So what's the deal?

I don't know if the city is in charge of maintenance. The park was started by one of the local rotary clubs, and I do know they are still working hard to improve and expand it. As for the dogs, my daughter is playing softball this year and plays soccer on the fields in the fall. I have a dog, I leave her at home. When she needs excercise, we take her out. I agree with you that people who take their animals to these kind of activities need to put them on a leash. I have seen others who are using the parking lot as a power walking run, or jogging track with their animals off the leash also. I have also seen people parked and using throwing tools and giving their dogs excercise in the non-kept areas of the park. I think more of a problem in this neighborhood may be that "some" owners are not responsible owners and let their animals run. As for the garbage, on my daughter's team, I know that the kids are all told to pick everything up off of the field before they leave. The Ellensburg wind does interesting things. Even when we at home, think we have a clean yard, we wake up in the am and sometimes are surprised with the amount of paper that has taken over our yard. As for the the driving, I am careful. I come early enough to get a parking space close, if I can. If I can't, I walk, even though I have a bad hip, and hurt, and don't have a disabled placard. I understand your frustation.

Who is in charge of the flora/fauna? If you walk through the park, and this includes behind the fields, there are no less than 20 dead trees. They are ugly and need to be replaced.
The height of the weeds around the ball field fences is waist high and when they seed out, all those seeds hit the homeowners properties in West Ellensburg.

Not to mention...wasn't there supposed to be a fishing pond, ampitheater and improved basketball and tennis courts? This park project has been going on for at least 7 years and all we get is baseball?

Anyone got any answers?

I do hope the city has a plan for the weeds for the 4th of July fireworks. I haven't been down to that area of the park since softball ended. It wouldn't take much, just a couple of people with weed eaters! I do know the extension of the park was planned to extend over a 10? year period, although with the economy, my guess the expansion will be slower, and may be put on hold. Funds are tight for everyone, especially volunteer groups.

We noticed the city FINALLY went out and mowed all the weeds down. I'm now guessing they were waiting until they were finished with the new irrigation project.
The city is planning fireworks and you are correct, the project was supposed to extend over a 10 year period. And I do understand the whole economic situation may put this on hold. But I just get so tired of seeing all the city workers going in and out of the park in pick-up trucks and flatbeds and never a dead tree pulled and removed from the premises. It's frustrating.
