The Tav...R.I.P.

So the new owners of the Tav are going to start serving hard liquor...great, you can kiss that fine establishment goodbye. Nothing ruins a great local tavern like 20-somethings all fired up on cheap Jack Daniels. I'll try not to slip on the vomit as I pass by on route to an alternative joint that pours a good cold beer, serves good food and is void of the problems that come with hard liquor.

but ellensburg businesses have a pattern of destroying whatever makes them flourish with "ideas of improvement".

I'm with youse guys (fishmonger and snorkus). They should leave the Tav as they found it. Next thing you know they will holding the high class bikini/wet t-shirt contests that are the pride of 3rd and Pearl.
have you been there in the last two months? bygenericbus March 05, 2009 (3 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
I've been going there off and on for years, and due to a recent change in my work schedule ( yes, the economy ) I've been a fairly regular patron on Fri and Sat afternoons since the New Year. Other than a slightly expanded menu, the Tav hasn't changed. Sure, I've seen a few hard drinks being served. The clients are still mostly townys. Relax,I think it will be ok.

I guess I miss the point about how a change in ownership, and the addition of hard liquor to the choices available at the Tav will result in the Tav's demise.

I suspect that fishmonger has some personal agenda against college students, of which I am not one.

"Cheap" Jack Daniels? Why will Jack Daniels be any cheaper because the Tav sells Hard Liquor?

A final comment. Good luck finding a tavern that does not sell hard liquor in this day and age, let alone one that serves good food. You won't find it here, so perhaps you should leave and go somewhere where you can get wasted on beer alone, along with the vomit that may accompany that experience.

TAVERNS bysnorkus March 06, 2009 (4 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
do not and are not allowed to sell hard booze - only bars etc. Thats the difference between a bar and a tavern.
my opinion... bygorilla in the room March 07, 2009 (6 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Did anyone actually happen to think that maybe, just maybe, these new owners could change the face of the local business?? That just maybe, they have new and innovative ideas on how to run a business and keep the streets vomit free??

There is so much pessimism these days so I say:

Good Luck guys!! Congratulations to the locals who bought a local business (instead of someone buying it who doesn't even live here!!)s

New Ownership Doesn't Mean New Principles byWillEyeAm March 07, 2009 (4 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
As a manager at The Tav, I must disagree with the original poster. We are very aware of the pessimism that a few community members feel about our move to include Hard Alcohol in our sales and we plan to proceed very carefully. I can assure each and every person that we are not looking to create the next meat-market like setting. We simply hope to enhance the experience that so many people already enjoy. I hope that after a long day some of you are able to come in and enjoy a scotch on the rocks or sample our new martini menu.

Hard Alcohol will not upset our current business plan and I personally promise that Wet T-shirt/Bikini contests are not part of that plan. If you have any doubts, please come in and talk to myself, Will, any of the new owners, or any of our long standing bartenders for reassurance!

The Tav is, and always has been, committed to a great quality experience for the best deal in town.

edit: Yes, Prime Rib and unique sides EVERY Friday!

Going to HAVE to investigate the quality of your margaritas very, very soon! Perhaps this next Friday evening.

Thank You very much for your post. Good luck with your business and I hope to be in to see you soon.

I am very excited for the new owners! They are committed to providing the same experience, food, and service the community has grown to love. They are hard working people, who in my opinion deserve a chance to prove they can and will keep this establishment the same place we all visit from time to time and enjoy. It is very obvious from your post that the staff is behind the new ownership, that is always a good thing. Good luck and I will be in for a "Super Mother" soon!

Glad to hear there are no plans compete with the Oak Rail's "contests". I'm still a bit skeptical of the change to include hard liquor but wish you the best.

As the original poster, it's time to update my original thoughts. I'm very pleased to hear that the new owners aren't going to turn the Tav into just another "meat market". I had dinner there last weekend and the food/service was as good as ever, and I enjoyed watching a hoops game and drinking my favorite ale. Keep up the good work and I'm sure those of us skeptics will be proven wrong.

So... What did you have for dinner? Has the menu changed? I always liked it in there.

Thanks for the post, glad you took the time to go in and check it out.

hard liquor vs soft beer bylordoflys March 13, 2009 (2 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Washington State needs to get with the rest of the world. Booze is booze and if the young lady prefers a Manhattan over a MacNJack then, by God, serve it to her. Washingtonians, like me, find out that its a brave new world out there that sells vodka outside of state booze stores (what a joke) and offers a shot of JD ala mode with your Chinook amber.

Hell, Oregon will be growing pot legally in another few years. Let's catch up to them!! Either that, or Mexico will be run by drug thugs within a decade. Give people what they want, because they'll get it one way or another.

couldn't have said it better myself.

I know a lot of people who don't like the taste of beer and would rather have something with hard a.

My Hubby and I were finally able to make it into the Tav for a burger and a beer on a Friday afternoon. It was the Friday before Central's graduation, I thought it would be very busy, crowded and service would be slow. Not the case! We came into a very low key lunch crowd saw a few people we knew and a very nice mix of college students and locals(tables and booths pretty much full). I was amazed at how many people who were there were served food and drinks very quickly! Congrats to the new owners! Keep it up! It is still the same place I went to 20 years ago! Food was great!
