$1.50 a gallon gas here we come..

It definitely looks like its heading that way pretty soon. Clarkston, Washington Costco is already at a $1.49 a gallon. Considering our gas taxes are about a dime a gallon higher than 4-5 years ago gas is definitely getting cheap. The refineries are actually losing money on unleaded gas. They are making up for it by the relatively high price of diesel and home heating oil.
I would rather be paying $2.50 a gallon and have the economy in decent shape anyday. The layoff notices are pretty depressing and a lot more people are going to be losing their jobs in housing, construction, govt, etc in the next month or so. Not to mention the auto industry.

Don't get me wrong, I love the lower prices. "Every little bit helps" as the saying goes and I can't wait to see if it gets to under a buck a gallon. Unfortunately, I don't think it'll matter much if we don't do something about the unemployment issue. What good will it do to bailout the financial sector if we have double-digit unemployment. The financial sector can pocket the money or offer it up for loans, but if your broke and out of work it won't matter to you what they do with it or how cheap gas is. "Hey buddy, can your spare a buck?", could be the 21st century depression saying that replaces the last depressions "hey buddy, can you spare a dime?" routine. Must be inflation!

If things don't change soon, construction may come to an almost complete halt. Home sales were pretty ugly in November, down 61% from last year. Prices were also off by 27%, with the median price down to $182,500. This may be a long winter......

Storey's cut their price to $2.25 a gallon for diesel yesterday. I think the cut was 27 cents a gallon. Interesting though I didnt see any container haulers in the station when I went by. I have been able to get around the high prices for home heating oil by buying the dyed diesel in Ellensburg and filling 6-five gallon containers at a time.

I am currently trying to sell some power tools for somone who has had to leave the construction trade and it looks very bleak so far-no responses. For as long as I can remember construction grade tools have been a very popular theft item. I have been a victim twice of the theft of high grade tools. Thieves have always been able to drive to construction sites or list them somewhere on CL or Ebay and sell them. On the bright side I bought a nice sawzall rather cheap a couple of days ago. I am just not sure its going to get used. Tool thieves I guess will just have to go back to the less profitable garden variety car prowl or maybe residential burlary.
